IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, also known as photorejuvenation or the photofacial and is fantastic for all kinds of skin pigmentations or darker patches of skin.
IPL treats the skin with quick and powerful flashes of light. The light energy then penetrates below the skin’s surface, where the unwanted brown pigment (melanin) lives. The heat breaks down this pigment into tiny particles, which either rise to the skin’s surface as scabs (naturally sloughing away within a week or so), or get carried away by the body’s lymphatic system.
Skin pigmentation can take the form of freckles, age spots or larger patches of discoloured skin. The most common form is hyperpigmentation, which is the excess production of the skin pigment melanin. Hyperpigmentation appears as localised patches, which are darker than the surrounding skin. The patches are typically non-raised, as the hyperpigmentation occurs beneath the top layer of skin.
IPL treatment can improve the appearance of:
- Dark patches
- Age & Sun Spots
- Some birthmarks
- Marks left from scars
